【大約在十年前，著名的華人生物學(xué)家蒲慕明先生曾經(jīng)有一封非常著名的email在網(wǎng)上廣為流傳，這封email是蒲先生寫給自己實(shí)驗(yàn)室所有博士生和博士后的。這封email寫的語重心長(zhǎng)，從中可以看出蒲先生的良苦用心。
中國(guó)科學(xué)院神經(jīng)科學(xué)研究所蒲慕明所長(zhǎng),對(duì)美國(guó)實(shí)驗(yàn)室的人大發(fā)雷霆。蒲慕明先生是伯克萊大學(xué)教授，中國(guó)科學(xué)院神經(jīng)科學(xué)研究所所長(zhǎng)。 2001年，蒲教授對(duì)美國(guó)實(shí)驗(yàn)室的人大發(fā)雷霆，你們太懶了，每年不能超過20天休假。每周必須工作至少六天。一天不來實(shí)驗(yàn)室必須得到我的同意。每周60小時(shí)動(dòng)手做實(shí)驗(yàn)、談天、上網(wǎng)、看文獻(xiàn)的時(shí)間不算。寫論文時(shí)再看文獻(xiàn)。你們誰不干，開路。每周得向我匯報(bào)。到今年6月每人得有兩篇J Neuroscience以上的論文。誰做不到，我要你8月開路。 2007年，蒲慕明要求神經(jīng)所全體學(xué)生端正學(xué)習(xí)態(tài)度。以下是蒲慕明教授寫給他實(shí)驗(yàn)室學(xué)生的信】

Lab members:
Over the past several months, it has become clear to me that if there is no drastic change in the lab, Poo lab will soon cease to be a productive, first-rate lab that you chose to join in the first place. Lab progress reports over the past six months have clearly shown the lack of progress in most projects. One year ago, when we first moved to Berkeley, I expressed clearly to everyone my expectation from each one in the lab.
The most important thing is what I consider to be sufficient amount of time and effort in the lab work. I mentioned that about 60 hr working time per week is what I consider the minimal time an average successful young scientist in these days has to put into the lab work. There may be a few rare lucky fellows like Florian, who had two Nature papers in his sleeve already, can enjoy life for a while and still get a job offer from Harvard. No one else in the lab has Florian's luxury to play around.Thus I am imposing strict rules in the lab from now on:
1. Everyone works at least 50 hr a week in the lab （e.g., 8+ hr a day, six days a week）. This is by far lower than what I am doing every day and throughout most of my career. You may be smarter or do not want to be successful, but I am not asking you to match my time in the lab.
2. By working, I mean real bench work. This does not include surfing on the computer and sending and receiving e-mails for non-scientific matters unrelated to your work （you can do this after work in the lab or at home, and excessive chatting on nonscientific matters. No long lunch break except special occasions. I suggest that everyone puts in at least 6 hr concentrated bench work and 2+ hr reading and other research-related activity each day. Reading papers and books should be done mostly after work. More time can be spent on reading, literature search and writing during working hours when you are ready for writing a paper.
3. I must be informed in person by e-mail （even in my absence from the lab）when you are absent from the lab for a whole day or more. Inform me early your vacation plan. Taking more than 20 working days out of one year is the maximum to me. In fact, none of you are reporting any vacation and sick leave on your time sheet （against the university rule, although I have been signing the sheets））, but you know roughly how many days you were not here. On the whole, I understand and accept the fact that you may not fulfill the above requirements all the time, due to health reasons, occasional personal business. But if you do not like to follow the rules because it is simply a matter of choice of life style, I respect your choice but suggest you start making plans immediately and leave the lab by the end of January 31. I will do my best to help you to locate a lab to transfer or to find a job. If you do accept the conditions I describe above, I am happy to continue to provide my best support to your work, hopefully more than I have done in the past. I will review the progress of everyone in the lab by the end of June of 2002. I expect everyone to have made sufficient progress in the research so that a good paper is in sight （at least to the level of J.Neuroscience. If you cannot meet this goal at that time, I will have to ask you to prepare to leave my lab by the end of August. － Working time: 8-hour is unpractical. There is NO way for a scientist or a Ph.D student to work only 8 hours a day! 每天僅僅工作8個(gè)小時(shí)是不行的。對(duì)于一個(gè)博士或者科學(xué)家，每天僅僅工作8個(gè)小時(shí)根本根本就是死路一條！（“NO way”）
－ Go to your mother’s house for afternoon naps and never come back! 如果有人敢午休，那就馬上卷鋪蓋走人，永遠(yuǎn)不要再回實(shí)驗(yàn)室！
－ Vacation: 5 weeks per year (Chinese New Year, the May Day and the National Day breaks are included) 包括春節(jié)、五一、國(guó)慶，每年全部假期一共5個(gè)星期。
－ Start your morning work not later than 8:30 am and afternoon work no later than 1 pm 上午必須早于8：30上班，下午早于1點(diǎn)上班。（注意，沒有規(guī)定幾點(diǎn)下班。）
－ Surf over the Internet for non-scientific purposes should be less than 30 min a day 每天用于看網(wǎng)頁以及其他與科研無關(guān)事情的時(shí)間不得多余30分鐘。
－ Reading newspapers should be limited less than 30 min a day 每天看報(bào)紙的時(shí)間不得多余30分鐘
－ Novels or other non-scientific journals/magazines are not permitted in the lab and office 小說和非科研性雜志不準(zhǔn)帶入實(shí)驗(yàn)室
－ If you are absent from the lab more than one hour, get permission first. 如果離開實(shí)驗(yàn)室超過1個(gè)小時(shí)，必須事先請(qǐng)假并得到允許。
－ Everyone has personal business, but the lab business always has priority unless in emergency 除非緊急的事情，否則實(shí)驗(yàn)室的事情永遠(yuǎn)大于私事。
－ In this business, an “average” student who works seven days a week is definitely more productive than a “genius” who works five days a week 在這行里，每周只工作5天，即使是天才，也比要低于比一個(gè)工作7天的資質(zhì)平平的人還要差。
－ If you are able to make any major progresses by working 8 hours a day and 5 days a week, every fortunate in this world must be on your side! 如果你即使每天工作8個(gè)小時(shí)并且每周只工作5天，居然也能成功哪怕只有一次（any）。那除非你是上帝（主宰了世界上一切的人）！

在過去的幾個(gè)月中，我發(fā)現(xiàn)如果再不對(duì)實(shí)驗(yàn)室進(jìn)行一次劇變，很快，Poo實(shí)驗(yàn)室就不是那個(gè)你們最初選擇加入的高產(chǎn)出，第一流的實(shí)驗(yàn)室了。從過去六個(gè)月的實(shí)驗(yàn)室進(jìn)展報(bào)告中可以清楚地看出大多數(shù)項(xiàng)目都沒有什么進(jìn)展。在我們一年前剛搬進(jìn)伯克利時(shí)，我就清楚地表達(dá)了我對(duì)實(shí)驗(yàn)室中每一員的期望。我認(rèn)為最重要的一點(diǎn)就是我希望大家保證在實(shí)驗(yàn)室中付出足夠的時(shí)間和努力。我提到了每周60小時(shí)是我所認(rèn)為的一個(gè)成功的年輕科學(xué)家每天呆在實(shí)驗(yàn)室的時(shí)間的最低限。 當(dāng)然，有極少數(shù)幸運(yùn)的同仁如Florian，他已經(jīng)發(fā)表了兩篇Nature并有了一份在哈佛的工作，是可以稍稍的享受下生活了。但是實(shí)驗(yàn)室的其他人都不能像Florian這樣奢侈的享樂。從現(xiàn)在起，我在實(shí)驗(yàn)室里立下嚴(yán)規(guī)：
1.每個(gè)人每星期必須在實(shí)驗(yàn)室50小時(shí)以上（比如說，每天八小時(shí)，每周六天。）這比我整個(gè)職業(yè)生涯每天所花的時(shí)間少得多。你們可能會(huì)比我聰明或者并不渴望成功，所以我并不以我的標(biāo)準(zhǔn)要求你們。
2. 工作，是指真正的搞研究，不包括上網(wǎng)，接發(fā)與科研無關(guān)的郵件（你可以在工作完成后在實(shí)驗(yàn)室或家中做這些）和過度的與科研無關(guān)的聊天。除了特殊情況，午餐后的休息時(shí)間不要太長(zhǎng)。我建議大家每天花至少六小時(shí)在自己的科研工作上，2個(gè)多小時(shí)做閱讀或其他和研究相關(guān)的活動(dòng)上。閱讀文獻(xiàn)和書籍應(yīng)放在工作之后。當(dāng)你打算著手寫論文時(shí)，建議將更多的工作時(shí)間用來閱讀，搜索和撰寫論文。
3. 當(dāng)你們超過一天不在實(shí)驗(yàn)室時(shí)，必須用e-mail告知我（即使我不在實(shí)驗(yàn)室）。提前告知我你們的假期計(jì)劃。對(duì)我來說，每年最多可以請(qǐng)20天的假。你們沒有一個(gè)人在你們的時(shí)間表上匯報(bào)了你們的假期和病假（盡管我給你們簽字了，但這是違反校規(guī)的），你們自己知道你們每年大概有多少天是沒有待在實(shí)驗(yàn)室里的。
總而言之，我知道出于一些個(gè)人的臨時(shí)狀況，健康因素等，讓你們時(shí)刻遵守這些規(guī)矩是不現(xiàn)實(shí)的。但如果你們出于個(gè)人生活方式不同而不遵守這些規(guī)定，我尊重你的決定并建議你早作打算，在一月31日以前卷鋪蓋走人，我會(huì)盡力幫你轉(zhuǎn)去另一個(gè)實(shí)驗(yàn)室或找份工作。如果你能接收我上面說的這些條件，我會(huì)非常開心地為你的工作提供支持，希望比以前做的更好。我已經(jīng)看過大家2002年六月末所做的工作進(jìn)展，祝愿大家的研究都進(jìn)展順利，這樣一篇好的論文就勝利在望了（至少達(dá)到《神經(jīng)科學(xué)雜志》的水平），如果那時(shí)你們還不能達(dá)到這個(gè)目標(biāo)，那我就不得不請(qǐng)你在8月底離開我們實(shí)驗(yàn)室。作為一個(gè)科學(xué)家，你必須把一切都獻(xiàn)身給科研事業(yè)。
